The University of Toronto's Citizen Lab published an interesting report on Nasdaq's teleconference app Zoom, a Silicon Valley based company. Researchers showed that some calls made in North America were routed through China — as were the encryption keys used to secure those calls. The report finds that Zoom’s service is “not suited for secrets” and that it may be legally obligated to disclose encryption keys to Chinese authorities and “responsive to pressure” from them. Zoom has responded saying that during its efforts to ramp up its server capacity to accommodate the massive influx of users over the past few weeks, it “mistakenly” allowed two of its Chinese data centers to accept calls as a backup in the event of network congestion. The report says “the mainline Zoom app appears to be developed by three companies in China, which all have the name 软视软件 (“Ruanshi Software”). Two of the three companies are owned by Zoom, whereas one is owned by an entity called 美国云视频软件技术有限公司 (“American Cloud Video Software Technology Co., Ltd.”) Job postings for Ruanshi Software in Suzhou include open positions for C++ coders, Android and iOS app developers, and testing engineers.” Citizen Lab has advised that use of Zoom be discouraged at this time for use cases that require strong privacy and confidentiality, including: Governments worried about espionage; Businesses concerned about cybercrime and industrial espionage; Healthcare providers handling sensitive patient information; and Activists, lawyers, and journalists working on sensitive topics.
