CHINA-EONOMY: UNEMPLOYMENT RISES IN CHINA

The South China Morning Post reported (April 13) that a recent monthly survey showed that the unemployment rate had already hit a record high last month. It said “The rate hit a record high of 6.2 per cent at the end of February” and that worse figures can be expected for March. Caixin separately disclosed that the massive home appliance maker Hisense is rumored to be laying off 10,000 employees. It quotied one employee in the company’s research department, as saying “Executives are determined to carry out the redundancies and most departments will be affected,  and that layoffs may affect as much as 20% of the companies [sic] staff.”Company Chairman Zhou Houjian said earlier this year that Hisense had a total global workforce of 80,000. Hisense has denied the report.
