CHINA-DISSIDENCE: AMNESTY CLAIMS CHINESE HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST LI QIAOCHU HAS BEEN DETAINED

Amnesty initiated a campaign on April 29 for Chinese human rights defender Ms Li Qiaochu, who is reported to have been taken away by Beijing police on February 16, 2020. She is detained incommunicado under “residential surveillance in a designated location”. Her arrest is suspected to be related to her activism against gender violence and the fact that her partner, Xu Zhiyong, attended an informal gathering of lawyers and activists in Xiamen in December 2019. Xu Zhiyong addressed a letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping on social media calling on him to step down.
