CHINA-TAIWAN: CENTRAL PARTY SCHOOL PUBLICATION 'STUDY TIMES' SEEKS TO COOL DOWN NATIONALIST SENTIMENT INSISTING ON MILITARY TAKEOVER OF TAIWAN

The South China Morning Post reported (May 10) that the Central Party School's publication 'Study Times' published a 5000-word article by historian Deng Tao reminding readers how the Qing had spent 20 years repairing for the invasion and conquest of Taiwan and that they had used political, diplomatic and economic measures to achieve their goal rather than just relying on force. it said a number of commentators and retired military commanders have recently called for Beijing to retake control of the island, with some former military leaders arguing that the United States is presently unable to come to Taiwan's assistance as 4 of its aircraft carriers have been affected by the Covid-19 outbreak. Some legal commentators, including Tian Feilong, an Associate Professor at Beihang University, in Beijing, have called on the government to consider the use of force. His article was published on the news website Guancha.cn. It recalled that two years ago Fang Bing, Professor at the PLA National Defence
University, told state broadcaster China Central Television that Beijing’s timetable for unification with Taiwan would neither be “slowed down when the Beijing-friendly Kuomintang comes to power, nor stepped up when the DPP becomes the ruling party”.
