CHINA-US: TWO US PROFESSORS ARRESTED FOR TAKING FUNDS FROM CHINA
The New York Times (May 11) reported that the US Justice Department had arrested Simon Ang of the University of Arkansas of improperly accepting funds from the Chinese government. He was charged with working and receiving funding from Chinese companies and from the Thousand Talents program. It said he kept the financial arrangements secret, allowing him to secure other grants from American government agencies, including NASA. Dr. Xiao-Jiang Li, a former Professor at Emory University in Atlanta, separately pleaded guilty on May 8, to a felony charge of filing a false tax return that omitted mentioning about $500,000 that he received from the Thousand Talents program. He was sentenced to a year of probation and ordered to pay $35,089 in restitution.
