CHINA-INDIA: SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST EDITORIAL CALLS FOR PEACEFUL RESOLUTION OF CONFRONTATION AT LAC

An intriguing editorial in the Hongkong-based South China Morning Post of June 4 claimed that nationalists in China and India eager to deflect attention from their countries’ Covid-19 crises are pushing deployment of soldiers to the border. Pointing out that territorial issues have been under discussion for over 20 years, it noted that the governments had not played up the issue. Interestingly, the article said, "That India redrew the region’s maps last year when it created the federally administered Ladakh and included the China-controlled region of Aksai Chin, which connects the sensitive areas of Xinjiang with western Tibet, was obviously inflammatory." It, however, expressed satisfaction that 'New Delhi has waved the US offer aside'.
