Writing in the People's Daily on June 5, Gao Xian, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Academic Adviser of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences 'Xi Jinping's New Age Socialism Thought Research Center with Chinese Characteristics', described the sudden outbreak of Coronavirus as "an extremely severe test for a great civilisation like China". He said "After the outbreak of the epidemic, the Party Central Committee made epidemic prevention and control a top priority. General Secretary Xi Jinping personally directed and deployed himself, insisting on putting people’s lives and health in the first place, and leading the entire party, the army, and the people of all ethnic groups to fight the war". He added that "Upholding the centralised leadership of the Party Central Committee is the fundamental guarantee for defeating the epidemic. In the face of this crisis, General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasised that the epidemic prevention and control must involve Party committees and governments at all levels and they must resolutely obey the Party Central Committee's command, unified coordination". The Party, he said "has inherited and carried forward its fine tradition, closely relying on the masses, vigorously mobilising the masses, and mobilising all aspects of the society to participate in the epidemic prevention and control struggle, forming a comprehensive mobilisation and deployment. History has and will continue to prove that there is no force that can stop the Chinese people from advancing..." .
