Supreme People's Court and Domestic Violence

At a press conference convened by the Supreme People's Court on February 27, 2014, the issue of domestic violence was highlighted. Judge Xue Shulan, Deputy Head of the #1 Criminal Division, appeared at the press conference.

Websites of the Supreme People's Court have published a number of domestic violence related articles in the past 3 weeks  and some of them have been reprinted on the website of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)'s Central Political Legal Committee, indicating that the Court's initiative has high level political backing. Deputies to the just concluded annual second session of the National People's Congress (NPC) had again brought up the subject of domestic violence and complained about the delay in progress on domestic violence legislation.  Scholars, NGOs, and the domestic public has been putting pressure on the courts to address the issue of domestic violence for some years now.
