CHINA-INTERNAL: LEADERSHIP

Preparations to commemorate Deng Xiaoping's 110th birth anniversary on August 22, 2014, have begun in China.

The English-language version of 'Caixin' magazine analysed the publicity being given to Deng Xiaoping on the occasion of his 110th birth anniversary. It noted that the CCP's official newspaper the 'People's Daily' had published a commentary comparing this year's memorial for Deng Xiaoping to last year's activities for the 120th anniversary of Mao Zedong's birth. It said that because Deng Xiaoping stood at the core of China's second generation of leadership and was the architect of reforms, his memorial should follow the same standard. On that occasion all seven members of the Politburo Standing Committee attended an event in which CCP CC General Secretary Xi Jinping delivered a speech. The People's Daily's overseas online edition said that this year's commemoration for Deng Xiaoping will shed light on the country's direction for reform.

Official commemorations of Deng Xiaoping's birth anniversary include four major articles about Deng Xiaoping published since June this year by 'The Study Times', owned by the Central Party School, and an article on August 1 by the CCP's theoretical journal ' Qiushi', which discussed Deng Xiaoping's role in modern China.

A new  48-episode drama series also started airing on CCTV-1 on August 8, about Deng Xiaoping's life. The series was made by CCTV and overseen by the Central Committee's Literature Research Office and Sichuan's Party Committee. A seminar on Deng's philosophy, organized by the CCP CC's Propaganda Department, the Central Party School, the Ministry of Education and others, is scheduled to be held in Beijing from August 22 to 24. Publishing companies have also started releasing books about Deng Xiaoping.
