CHINA-US

China’s rejection of America’s call for a construction freeze in the South China Sea (proposed by the US on July 12) reinforced worldwide impressions that the PRC is assertive and the U.S. ineffectual. The latest Pew Global Attitudes Survey indicated that 55% of Americans have a negative view of China and that 78% believe China’s government doesn’t respect individual freedoms. It also said that China’s Asian neighbors are growing more concerned about how the PRC wields its power in the region.

Meanwhile, the CCP continues a campaign, reminiscent of earlier “spiritual pollution” purges, aimed at combatting the influence of Western culture and values in China. Policymakers in both nations warn of the dangers of worsening bilateral relations.
