CHINA-NORTH KOREA

The South Korean newspaper 'Chosun Ilbo' pointed to the apparently strained relations between China and North Korea following North Korea's third nuclear test last year and which, it said,  are manifest on the website of the Chinese Foreign Ministry. Reporting on the 17 meetings held by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum in Burma it said that Wang Yi's meeting with North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Su-yong merited only 72 words, in contrast to an average of 330 words for the other 16. The Chinese Foreign Minister's meeting with his U.S. counterpart John Kerry was reported in 564 words. His meetings with the Foreign Ministers of Indonesia were reported in 505, South Korea in 461, Vietnam in 430, India in 394, Australia in 369,  Brunei in 336 and Bangladesh in 276.  The second shortest entry was on Wang Yi's meeting with his counterpart from Japan, which merited a chilly 108 words.  The official [North] Korean Central News Agency on  August 11 made no mention at all of Ri Su-yong's meeting with Wang Yi. North Korea has also sent no message of condolence after more than a week since a devastating earthquake wreaked havoc on China's Yunnan Province.
