CHINA-DISSENT: XU ZHIYONG FORMER TSINGHUA PROFESSOR AND CRITIC OF CHINESE PRESIDENT XI JINPING WAS FORMALLY ARRESTED ON JUNE 19
Former Tsinghua University Professor, prominent legal scholar and activist Xu Zhiyong, who has been held incommunicado for five months, was formally arrested on June 19 for “inciting subversion of state power”. Along with more than 10 human rights defenders, Xu Zhiyong was detained by police after joining a social gathering in Xiamen. He has no access to his family and lawyers of his choice. Xu Zhiyong has been placed under residential surveillance at an undisclosed designated location.
