CHINA-INTERNAL: CHINESE RESEARCHER AT SHANGHAI ACADEMY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES SUGGESTS NEED FOR CHANGE IN CHINA'S APPROACH IN FOREIGN POLICY

Writing in the Washington Times (August 8), Gerry Shih quoted Li Kaisheng, a researcher at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, saying in an op-ed in the Global Times newspaper this week that China should focus on its “primary conflict” — with the United States — rather than respond to every slight from other countries. Li Kaisheng said: “A lion does not swat a fly as soon as it lands on it, but a porcupine pricks up as soon as anything brushes against its back.”
