CHINA-PLA: REPORTS THAT CHINA PLANS LARGE SCALE LANDING EXERCISE AT PRATAS ISLANDS IN SOUTH CHINA SEA

Amidst reports that China's PLA Navy (PLAN) is planning a large-scale landing exercise in the South China Sea later this month which will specifically simulate an invasion of Taiwan’s Dongsha Islands (Pratas Islands, 東沙群島), Taiwan has sent additional Marines to the Pratas Islands. PLA National Defense University professor Li Daguang, who was quoted in the pro-Beijing Bauhinia Magazine as confirming reports of the exercise, according to Kyodo Newsagency (August 3) subsequently denied this to Global Times and said: "I did mention a PLA drill aimed at seizing the Dongsha Islands in August, but this was citing the report by Kyodo News in May. It's absolutely not a confirmation of their speculation."
