CHINA-TAIWAN: AIR INTRUSION

Maj. Gen. Hsiung Hou-chi, Chief of Staff of the ROC Air Force Combat Command, disclosed on August 26, 2014, that a Chinese Y-8 electronic surveillance aircraft intruded into Taiwan's air defense identification zone (ADIZ) four times that morning and was intercepted by Taiwanese fighter jets and escorted out of the zone each time. He said that on all four occasions the Y-8 aircraft flew through the southwestern corner of Taiwan's ADIZ.  Two of the intrusions occurred on one sortie when a Y-8 aircraft flew through the zone as it headed toward the Philippines and then flew back through the zone as it headed home to the Chinese mainland. The pattern was repeated in the afternoon with a different Y-8 aircraft . Each intrusion lasted about 10 minutes and all occurred at altitudes of about 22,000 feet.

Maj. Gen. Hsiung Hou-chi said these were the first intrusions into Taiwan's ADIZ in August by aircraft from another country.
