CHINA-LEADERSHIP: ZHENG SHANJIE APPOINTED NEW GOVERNOR OF ZHEJIANG PROVINCE

58-year old Zheng Shanjie was appointed Governor of Zhejiang Province on September 4. He took over from Yuan Jiajun, who was promoted as Party Secretary of Zhejiang earlier last week.

(Comment: Zheng Shanjie has spent most of his career in his native Fujian, becoming Vice Governor of the province in February 2015. Starting in August 2015, he served for two years as Exec. Deputy Director of the National Energy Administration (until April 2017) and then as Deputy Director of the Taiwan Affairs Office. In December 2017, Zheng Shanjie was moved to Zhejiang where he was appointed Party Secretary of Ningbo. Since May 2018, he has also been serving as Zhejiang Deputy Party Secretary. While in Fujian, Zheng Shanjie worked closely with Xi Jinping's good friend He Lifeng, who now heads the National Development and Reform Commission. With 7 years before his retirement, Zheng Shanjie is likely to be promoted as a provincial Party Secretary and could then be a candidate for the Politburo in 2027.)
