On September 9, 2020, which was also the forty-fourth death anniversary of Mao Zedong, Geng Xiaonan and her husband Qin Zhen (秦真) were detained by the Beijing police, prompting Prof. Xu Zhangrun to publish an 'open' letter appealing for her release. Geng Xiaonan (耿瀟男)  had spoken out in defense of Prof. Xu Zhangrun when he was arrested. She is a noted cultural critic and publisher, as well as being the editor-in-chief and proprietor with her husband of Ruiya Books. Geng Xiaonan is also known for her outspoken support of, among others, Xu Zhiyong, Chen Qiushi, Ding Jiaxi and Wang Yi.
