CHINA-LEADERSHIP: CHINESE PRESIDENT XI JINPING CHAIRS CONFERENCE OF SCIENTISTS

On September 11, Chinese President Xi Jinping hosted a symposium for scientists in Beijing. In his speech, he emphasised that China's economic and social development and the improvement of people's livelihood more than ever require scientific and technological solutions, as well as the first driving force of innovation. He said, "The vast majority of Chinese scientists and scientific and technological workers have the confidence, will and ability to reach the peak of science." Xi Jinping said China’s development during the 14th Five-Year Plan period has put forward more urgent requirements for accelerating technological innovation. These are: (i) accelerating technological innovation is the need to promote high-quality development.(ii) accelerating technological innovation is essential to realize high-quality life for the people. (iii) accelerating technological innovation is needed to build a new development pattern. Technological innovation is the key to create new demand with new supply and ensure the safety and stability of the industrial chain and supply chain. And (iv) accelerating scientific and technological innovation is a requirement for smoothly starting the new journey of building a modern socialist country. From the initial proposal of the "four modernizations" to the current proposal of comprehensively building a modern and powerful socialist country, the modernization of science and technology has always been an important part of my country's modernization.
