CHINA-PLA: ARTICLE CLAIMS HIGH DEGREE OF DIGITISATION IN PLA WESTERN THEATRE COMMAND WITH ARTILLERY LINKED TO J-10 FIGHTER AIRCRAFT

A discussion among Chinese military analysts on September 18 claimed that the PLA Western Theatre Command had a high degree of digitisation with Artillery linked to J-10 fighter aircraft. They claimed the digital combat system is not only equipped with some walkie-talkies and the like in the squad, battalion and company units, but a complete architecture built on the concept of "network cloud". In addition to individual soldiers, the units included are all combat units such as tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, artillery groups and aviation. Individual soldiers on the ground can now directly call for aviation fire support, or the rear artillery can increase their fire assault capabilities considerably increasing combat efficiency. Judging from a recent CCTV military telecast of combined military exercises in the Western Theatre Command, it was observed that the command vehicle goes up to the front line and the forward vanguard is equipped with a digital communication system to connect with the command unit in real-time. After encountering the enemy, the individual soldiers communicate with the rear artillery group in real-time through the digital terminal, and the air aviation troops simultaneously initiate fire support. Soon thereafter, the artillery directly coordinates with the J-10 fighters to launch strong firepower strikes and accurately hit the target. It emphasised that "highly informatized digital unity" enables forces to attack together and concentrate all resources at one point.

Now casualties are lower, personnel are safer and the presence of multi-purpose tanks and vehicles allows ground troops to complete a variety of support tasks, even if they are hiding in caves, rooms, and vehicles. They can also flexibly change weapons, such as targeting Flamethrower for indoor combat environment, mortars, rapid-fire guns, and air defense missiles.
