CHINA-US: MING PAO QUOTES CHINESE THINK-TANK AS SAYING COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN US AND CHINA NEARLY SUSPENDED BUT GLOBAL TIMES SAYS THEY ARE OPEN

Hong Kong newspaper Ming Pao on October 8, quoted Wu Shicun, President of the National Institute for the South China Sea Studies, as saying that bilateral crisis management and control mechanisms between China and the US were nearly suspended amid all-out confrontation between the two sides, which could lead to misfires if soldiers on both sides clash at sea. However, the CCP-owned Global Times said (October 9) it had learned from a related source that the Chinese and US militaries maintain phone calls between high-level officials, and communication channels between defense attaches are also open.

Separately, Senior Colonel Zhang Nandong, spokesperson for the PLA Southern Theater Command said on October 9, that the U.S.  guided missile destroyer John McCain had entered waters around the disputed Paracel Islands in the South China Sea claimed by China without China’s permission and that the Southern Theatre Command's naval and air forces tracked, monitored and identified them and warned them to leave.
