CHINA-LEADERSHIP: CCP CC GENERAL SECRETARY XI JINPING ADDRESSES 'MODEL AND ADVANCED WORKERS'

CCP CC General Secretary Xi Jinping delivered an important speech at the National Commendation Conference for Model Workers and Advanced Workers held in Beijing on November 24, where he was quoted by CCTV in its Focus Programme on November 28, as saying "Socialism is done, and the new era is a struggle. Model workers are national elites and people. The role model of the Republic is the hero of the Republic." He said the Party and the country have always attached great importance to the selection and recognition of model workers. Since 1950, we have held 16 commendation conferences to commend 34,008 national model workers and advanced workers. Since the 1990s, the National Model Worker Recognition Conference has been held every five years. This year, 1,689 national model workers and 804 national advanced workers have been commended. Among them are frontline workers and enterprise technical personnel, as well as farmers and outstanding workers on the front line of the epidemic. Today, China is about to embark on a new journey of comprehensively building a modern socialist country. Xi Jinping said starting from 2021, China will enter the "14th Five-Year Plan" period when the competition in overall national strength is ultimately the competition of talents and the quality of labour. To face the new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation, he said, China needs more knowledge-based, skilled, and innovative workers. CCTV disclosed that in February 2017, the 32nd meeting of the Central Leading Group for Comprehensively Deepening Reform deliberated and approved the "Industrial Worker Team Building Reform Plan in the New Era". It described this as a major reform that General Secretary Xi Jinping personally selected, deployed, and directed.
