CHINA-POVERTY ALLEVIATION: CHINA CLAIMS TO HAVE SHIFTED 10 MILLION POOR PEOPLE FROM INHOSPITABLE AREAS BETWEEN 2016-2020

CCTV reported (December 3) that the Politburo Standing Committee met on December 3 to listen to a summary and evaluation report on poverty alleviation. CCP CCGeneral Secretary Xi Jinping presided and delivered an important speech. At a press conference in Beijing on December 3, China's State Council Information Office stated that China had relocated nearly 10 million poor people from inhospitable areas from 2016 to 2020, describing it as 'a feat in both human migration and global poverty reduction efforts'. The People's Daily on December 3 disclosed that from 2016 to 2020, the central government's special poverty alleviation funds increased by 20 billion yuan a year for five consecutive years, and will reach 146.1 billion yuan in 2020. This year, a one-time arrangement of 30 billion yuan in comprehensive financial subsidies was provided to support the shortcomings of poverty alleviation in the areas listed in the supervision and warfare.
