CHINA-TAIWAN: TAIWAN BACKS AUSTRALIA IN ONGOING TENSION WITH CHINA

Before chairing the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Central Standing Committee meeting in Taipei on December 2, Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen said that Taiwan would take action to back Australians at a time when they are “under tremendous pressure.” She said Taipei and Canberra have been mutually supportive in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in exchanging critical medical materials in the early stages. She added that Taiwan and Australia are like-minded nations, sharing the common values of democracy, freedom and human rights, while their economic and trade relations have also become close. Earlier on December 1, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted a photograph on Twitter of two bottles of wine, with a caption that read: “We stand in solidarity with #Australia by serving #FreedomWine at @MOFA_Taiwan.”  Taiwan's Ambassador to the Holy See, Matthew Lee also joined in the campaign on December 1,  by buying a box of Australian wine. A DPP legislator and seven others posted a photograph of them holding bottles of Australian wine.
