China's Economic Daily (Jingji Ribao - January 17) published a lengthy interview with Xue Qikun (薛其坤院士) captioned “The quantum technology revolution is a major historical opportunity". Xue Qikun is with the Department of Physics of Tsinghua University and briefs the Politburo annually on Emerging Technologies. Xue Qikun observed that the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan are focussed on quantum technology, and added that China lags behind the United States, which has the most comprehensive fields, leads in the most critical technologies and is the strongest in overall strength. In the interview Xue Qikun said China should focus on quantum in the "14th Five-Year Plan" and its long-term goals for 2035, build talent, and indigenise some basic materials such as key components and equipment where China still rely on imported equipment.
