CHINA-LEADERSHIP: CHINA CONVENED '2021 WORK CONFERENCE ON TAIWAN' IN BEIJING ON JANUARY 17-18, 2021

Xinhua (January 18) reported that the '2021 Working Conference on Taiwan' was held in Beijing on January 17 and 18. PBSC member and CPPCC Chairman Wang Yang attended the meeting and delivered a speech. He emphasized that it is necessary to be guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, conscientiously implement the Party Central Committee’s work decisions and arrangements for Taiwan, adhere to the one-China principle and the "92 Consensus", and resolutely curb separatist activities and external interference by "Taiwan independence". Actively promote the peaceful development and integration of cross-strait relations, advance the process of reunification of the motherland, make contributions to the comprehensive construction of a modern socialist country, make a good start, and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the party with outstanding achievements. Xinhua said Wang Yang had described 2020 as "an extremely unusual year for Taiwan". He urged all regions and departments to study in-depth and comprehend General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important exposition on Taiwan work, respond to changes, overcome difficulties, and coordinate the response to the epidemic prevention and control and economic and social development related to Taiwan, and effectively deal with complex situations. He asserted that consolidating the general trend of opposing "independence" and promoting reunification and the one-China pattern of the international community have not come easily. Wang Yang pointed out that "the situation across the Taiwan Strait is still grim and complicated" and "there are new changes in the opportunities and challenges facing Taiwan work". He stressed that It is necessary to resolutely curb the separatist forces of "Taiwan independence", not allow them to threaten national sovereignty, security, and development interests, and "never allow anyone or any force to split Taiwan from the embrace of the motherland in any way". He said "it is necessary to support Taiwanese businessmen and enterprises to seize the opportunity of the country to build a new development pattern, actively participate in the implementation of the "14th Five-Year" plan, the national and regional coordinated development strategy, and support Fujian to explore new paths for cross-strait integration and development". He said "all regions and departments must have the “big man of the country” in mind, improve political judgment, political understanding, and political execution, consolidate responsibilities, strengthen coordination, and implement the strengthening of the party’s overall leadership in the entire process of all aspects of Taiwan’s work. The relevant decisions and deployment of the central government have been fully implemented". Yang Jiechi, Politburo member and Director of the CCP CC's Office for Foreign Affairs, presided over the meeting.
