CHINA-US: CHINA SANCTIONS 28 FORMER OFFICIALS OF TRUMP ADMINISTRATION

In a statement issued minutes after Biden took over as US President on January 20, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: "Over the past few years, some anti-China politicians in the United States, out of their selfish political interests and prejudice and hatred against China and showing no regard for the interests of the Chinese and American people, have planned, promoted and executed a series of crazy moves which have gravely interfered in China's internal affairs, undermined China's interests, offended the Chinese people, and seriously disrupted China-U.S. relations." It also announced sanctions against 28 officials Those sanctioned include: former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, former White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, former National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien, former U.N. ambassador Kelly Craft and recently resigned Deputy National Security Adviser Matthew Pottinger. Former national security adviser John Bolton and former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon were also included. The sanctions prohibit these individuals and their immediate family members from entering mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao. They are also restricted from doing business with China, as are any companies or institutions associated with them.

China's Global Times (January 21) quoted Lü Xiang, an expert of US studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing, as telling Global Times on January 21 that the sanctions would seriously affect "the politicians' road for gaining money. For instance, like Stilwell on the sanction list, we met in Washington when he was going to retire from the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 2015.  At that time, the issues that most interested him were about doing business." Lü Xiang added, "This powerful sanction is also a warning to the officials who want to be the next Pompeo." Shen Yi, a Professor at the School of International Relations and Public Affairs of Fudan University in Shanghai, told the Global Times "When these people were in office, they jumped like mad dogs and used their power to make a mess of the China-US relationship. China would never allow people to make money on the Chinese market while attacking the country."
