CHINA-AUSTRALIA: CHINESE-BORN AUSTRALIAN JOURNALIST IN BEIJING ARRESTED ON FEBRUARY 5 FOR "SUPPLYING STATE SECRETS OVERSEAS"

Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payn disclosed (February 9) that China formally arrested a Chinese-born Australian journalist working for the state-owned CGTN, the English-language channel of China Central Television, on suspicion of illegally supplying state secrets overseas. She said, “The Australian government has raised its serious concerns about Ms. Cheng’s detention regularly at senior levels, including about her welfare and conditions of detention.” The arrest of Cheng Lei on February 5 starts an official criminal investigation and came six months after she was detained.
