CHINA-US: PEOPLE'S DAILY CALLS FOR IMPROVING TIES WITH U.S. SAYING IT WOULD COMPLY WITH PUBLIC OPINION

The People's Daily (February 14) published an article captioned 'Working together to open up a bright future for Sino-US relations is the right thing to comply with public opinion and the general trend, and both sides should act'. Noting that this year is the 50th anniversary of Kissinger's secret visit to China it referred to the telephone conversation between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Biden and emphasised "China-US cooperation will benefit both, and struggle will hurt both. Cooperation is the only correct choice for both sides." It observed that "due to the Trump administration's extremely wrong anti-China policy, Sino-US relations have encountered unprecedented serious difficulties since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which has caused widespread concern in the international community. With the new US government coming to power, all parties generally expect that China and the United States will find a practical path to push bilateral relations out of the predicament and get back on track as soon as possible." Asserting that "China is committed to developing cooperative relations with the United States", it said "but this kind of cooperation is bound to be principled cooperation. Issues such as Taiwan, Hong Kong-related issues, and Xinjiang-related issues are China's internal affairs and are related to China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The United States should respect China's core interests and act cautiously." Pointing out that "as the world's two largest economies and permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and the United States also have broad room for cooperation in dealing with various global issues" and "the international community generally expects China-US cooperation to inject more stability into the world in a period of turbulent change", the article said in conclusion that "Opening the window of opportunity and promoting the healthy and stable development of China-US relations can benefit the people of the two countries and the people of the world. Working together to open up a bright future for China-US relations is the right thing to comply with public opinion and the general trend, and both sides should act."
