The People's Daily published (February 21) a nearly 5000-character article by Politburo member Yang Jiechi highlighting China's contribution to multipolarity. Yang Jiechi said China 'holds high the banner of a community with a shared future for mankind and firmly safeguard the authority of the United Nations. Building a community with a shared future for mankind focuses on the interests of all countries in the world and the well-being of all mankind'. He recalled a speech by General Secretary Xi Jinping where he "pointed out that the establishment of "small circles" in the international arena and artificial separation or even isolation can only push the world into division or even confrontation. A divided world cannot cope with the common challenges facing mankind. Mankind has paid a heavy price on this issue, and we must never take that old path again". Yang Jiechi added "We must vigorously advocate multilateralism and the democratization of international relations, oppose hegemonism and power politics, oppose unilateralism in the name of multilateralism, and insist that countries, big or small, strong or weak, rich or poor, are equal members of the international community. Resolutely oppose the use of ideology to draw lines, unity and not division, cooperation and not confrontation, harmony not zero-sum, and “big family” not “small circles”. Listing the various agreements like the RCEP and China-EU Investment Agreement signed by China recently, he said "In recent months, under the personal command and promotion of General Secretary Xi Jinping, China's multilateral diplomacy has made significant progress". Calling for building "a new type of international relations", Yang Jiechi asserted in conclusion that "China will continue to be a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, and a defender of international order. Under the strong leadership of the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, China will firmly uphold and practice multilateralism and make new and greater contributions to building a community with a shared future for mankind and promoting world peace and development".
