CHINA-NPC: CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTER WANG YI STATES POSITION ON TAIWAN AT PRESS CONFERENCE ON SIDELINES OF NPC SESSION

Global Times (March 7) said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was invited to discuss "China’s foreign policy and foreign affairs relationship" related questions from Chinese and foreign reporters. Replying to a journalists question he said: "Regarding the Taiwan issue, I would like to emphasize three points: First of all, there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory. This is a historical and legal fact, and it is also a general consensus of the international community. Second, the two sides of the Taiwan Strait must be reunified, and it is bound to be reunified. This is the general trend and the collective will of the Chinese nation. It will not change, nor can it be changed. The Chinese government is unwavering in its determination to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. We are capable of thwarting any form of "Taiwan independence" separatist actions. Third, the one-China principle is the political foundation of Sino-US relations and an insurmountable red line. The Chinese government has no room for compromise on the Taiwan issue and no room for concession. We urge the new administration of the United States to fully understand the high sensitivity of the Taiwan issue, to abide by the one-China principle and the three Sino-U.S. joint communiqués, to completely change the previous administration’s dangerous practices of "crossing the line" and "playing with fire", and be prudent and properly deal with Taiwan-related issues. Thank you."
