CHINA-INDIA: CHINA'S CCTV REPORTS INDIA IS STRENGTHENING ITS UNDERWATER COMBAT POWER

State-owned CCTV telecast its Focus Today Programme (March 12) headlined 'India strengthens its underwater combat power, the United States is eager to tie India to the "Indo-Pacific tank"?' It featured India's third diesel-electric powered "Scorpionfish" class attack submarine "Karanj", which it said had begun service in the Navy on March 10. It noted that "Scorpionfish" class submarines can carry out various anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare and intelligence reconnaissance missions and cited the Indian media as forecasting that India may sign more arms purchase agreements before and after the US Defense Secretary's visit to India. It said in addition to drones, India hopes to buy more advanced American fighter jets. Mentioning that on March 12, the leaders of the United States, Japan, Australia and India would hold an online summit, it said the meeting will discuss a series of international issues, including the new crown epidemic, economic cooperation and climate change.
