CHINA-US: CHINESE AMBASSADOR CUI TIANKAI GIVES INTERVIEW JUST 24 HOURS PRIOR TO THE US-CHINA MEETING IN ANCHORAGE RULING OUT ANY COMPROMISE BY CHINA

In a joint interview with Xinhua News Agency, China International Television, and Phoenix Satellite TV just 24 hours before the Sino-US high-level strategic dialogue in Anchorage on March 17, China's Ambassador to the U.S. Cui Tiankai said while China doesn't "expect a single dialogue to solve all the problems between China and the United States, so there are no high expectations or illusions about this dialogue", he hoped this can be a beginning. Saying that "most countries in the world, including some allies of the United States and allies in Asia, actually have several big question marks in their hearts. One is whether the United States can truly play the role of a responsible stakeholder in international affairs", he referred to the latest U.S. sanctions on 24 Chinese and Hongkong officials. Observing that "it is not the first time that the US has done this kind of damage to China's sovereignty and bilateral relations", he added, "We firmly oppose it and will take necessary countermeasures, and this time is no exception". On issues related to Hong Kong, Xinjiang, and Taiwan, he described these as core interests and stated that "China has no room for compromise and concessions. This is also the attitude we will make clear in this meeting". He said, "If someone thinks that China came to Alaska with sincerity this time to make compromises and concessions, then I would suggest that my colleagues in Beijing cancel this trip as soon as possible".
