CHINA-LEADERSHIP: CHINA'S OFFICIAL MEDIA FRONT-PAGE REPORTS ON APRIL 4, OF CHINESE PRESIDENT XI JINPING PLANTING TREES ON QINGMING

China Daily (April 4) front-paged a report on the Qingming (Ching Ming) Festival, also known as Tomb Sweeping Day, when Chinese people honour nature and their ancestors, that this year was on April 4. Saying it is traditional to plant trees as the festival draws near, it highlighted that this is an activity President Xi Jinping has participated in for years. CCTV (April 3) telecast a report on Xi Jinping planting a tree in Beijing. Qiu Shi (Seeking Truth) said that CCP CC General Secretary Xi Jinping "wants to establish a good manner of advocating heroes and remembering the martyrs in the whole society, and he wants to warn all comrades in the party not to forget how the red regime came and how the new China came, and how today’s happy life came" and "to declare that the Communist Party of China will always hold high the red banner, firmly follow the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and continue to advance the cause pioneered by its ancestors." It exhorted "Let us follow in the footsteps of the General Secretary, follow the Red Revolution memorial place, cherish the memory of the heroes, and feel the heroic spirit of heaven and earth, and the soul of eternal China. CCTV (April 3) telecast a similar report. It said China Central Radio and Television and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism are also commemorating Qingming (April 3), and urging the people to "commemorate the martyrs and learn party history" in the form of a special party class on Qingming Festival, recite Li Dazhao's famous prose "Youth", recalling this great proletariat revolutionary. The People's Daily also highlighted 'model' soldier Lei Feng.
