CHINA-CORRUPTION: FORMER HEAD OF CHINA'S LARGEST WEAPONS MANUFACTURERS NORINCO HAS BEEN PLACED UNDER INVESTIGATION

The Central Discipline Inspection Commission (CDIC) announced on April 4, that 65-year old Yin Jiaxu, who was Communist Party chief and Chairman of China North Industries Group Corporation (Norinco) -- one of China’s largest weapons manufacturers -- until his retirement in 2018, is being investigated for “serious violations of discipline and the law”. Yin Jiaxu is the latest high-level official from the defence industry to be investigated by the CDIC. Interestingly, the news was publicised by People's Daily on its front-page.

(Comment: In January 2021, the CDIC announced that Hu Wenming, former party chief and Chairman of the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, who oversaw the development of the Liaoning and Shandong aircraft carriers, had been expelled from the party for taking bribes and abusing his power. In his case there were unconfirmed reports that he was also being investigated for selling secrets to foreign powers.)
