CHINA-ECONOMY: INFLUENTIAL CHINESE BLOGGER ENDORSES CHINESE GOVERNMENT'S 'DIGITAL CONTROL METHODS'

Harvard alumni Ren Yi, aka Chairman Rabbit and grandson of CCP leader Ren Zhongyi whose blog has over a million followers on Weibo, on April 6 posted a blog arguing that the pandemic has made Chinese people more aware of digital control methods and their benefits, e.g., real-name registration, face recognition, and location monitoring. He claimed that the pandemic formed "a causal relationship between the transfer of personal (digital) privacy and access to public safety/welfare in a relatively short period of time" and that society's digitization is making China the safest country in the world and a nightmare for criminals. It changed people's perceptions of digital governance, which they now view positively. Ren Yi also believes that digital governance and infrastructure have additional applications, from public governance and smart cities to counter-terrorism, and climate change. He stated too that the Chinese system where the government obtains data for itself for expansion of public power or the betterment of society/the public, will not be acceptable in the United States where many Americans will suspect the government of accumulating excessive power.
