CHINA-LEADERSHIP: CHINESE PRESIDENT XI JINPING AND PREMIER LI KEQIANG ATTEND NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TELECOM FRAUD

The National Work Conference on Combating New Types of Telecom and Online Criminal Activity was held virtually in Beijing on April 9. Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang and the Deputy Secretary of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission and Minister of Public Security Zhao Kezhi spoke at the meeting. Xi Jinping emphasised that "to effectively combat telecom and online fraud all need to make the people the centre of their work" it is necessary to coordinate development and safety, strengthen rule-by-law mindset, and solve problems at the root cause.  He also called on the finance, telecom, and internet sectors to implement oversight and for the strengthening of law-based institutions, propaganda, education, and prevention, better international law enforcement cooperation and resolute deterrence of telecom and online fraud to contribute to a China that is safe and ruled by law. The People's Daily (April 10) reported that representatives from the Cyberspace Administration, Ministry of Industrial and Information Technology, People’s Bank of China, the Supreme People’s Court, and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate spoke at the meeting. The State Council Combating New Types of Telecom and Online Criminal Activity Working Department Joint Meeting members, as well as members at the provincial-, city-, and county levels attended.
