CHINA-APPOINTMENTS: VICE FOREIGN MINISTER QIN GANG TIPPED AS CHINA'S NEXT AMBASSADOR TO U.S.

The Wall Street Journal (April. ) reported that Beijing plans to appoint Qin Gang, a diplomat who has acted as President Xi Jinping’s chief protocol officer, as the next ambassador to Washington. Qin Gang is a Vice Minister but has never served as an Ambassador. The Wall Street Journal said Xi Jinping thinks highly of him and that when Qin Gang was MFA spokesman he had good relationships with some foreign media. Since joining the Foreign Ministry in 1988, Qin Gang worked his way up from a junior aide, to the Ministry’s spokesman, to become a Vice Minister responsible for European affairs and news as well as planning events for Xi Jinping. In recent years, he has accompanied Mr. Xi on many trips overseas and become a trusted aide to the leader. Qin Gang's first job was from 1988-1992 - Staff, Beijing Service Bureau for Diplomatic Missions, the People's Republic of China.
