CHINA-EMPLOYMENT: POLITBURO MEMBER AND VICE PREMIER SUN CHUNLAN ADVISES COLLEGE GRADUATES SEEKING JOBS TO GO TO CHINA'S CENTRAL AND WESTERN REGIONS

The Chinese leadership is grappling with creating jobs for the record 9.09 million students who will graduate from Chinese universities in 2021. Xinhua (May 17) quoted Politburo member and Vice Premier Sun Chunlan advising, while speaking at a week-long job fair at China Agricultural University on May 17, that “College graduates should formulate appropriate ideas about employment, aim high, fuse personal goals with those of the Party and country, make practical plans for their work and lives… go to the central and western regions and find work in areas where the country most needs [workers]”. The Chinese employment website Zhaopin shows there are 1.4 jobs available per college graduate. The problem is not that there aren’t enough jobs, but that there aren’t enough jobs in the right places.
