CHINA-TIBET: TIBETAN'S LARUNG GAR BUDHIST ACADEMY CONDUCTS POLITICAL EDUCATION ACTIVITIES

The Serthar Buddhist College, the Larung Gar Temple Management Committee, the Ethnic and Religious Affairs Bureau of Serthar County and the Serthar County Civil Affairs Bureau on April 27, 2021, issued a public notice explicitly dispelling the hype surrounding the well-known Larung Gar Buddhist Academy and the Nubzig (Ch: Luoruo) sky burial site, both in Serthar (Ch: Seda) County in eastern Tibet, as tourist attractions. The notice states that the Academy and the funeral site “are not tourist attractions” but did not ban tourists from visiting the two sites of Tibetan religious and cultural significance. The notice also reaffirmed that Larung Gar is a religious institute for training practitioners of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism, undertaking “normal” religious teachings and activities, as is required by Chinese law.

Separately, on May 8 the Larung Gar Buddhist Academy held a 'political education' as part of the Party History Education campaign launched throughout Tibet and China prior to the centennial anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party in July this year. At Larung Gar Buddhist Academy, the political education drive focused on five themes: (i) The Communist Party’s activities during the early years of occupation in the Kardze (Ganzi) area; (ii) A China versus foreign countries comparative study of the response and management of the Covid-19 outbreak to promote “Socialism with Chinese Characteristics”; (iii) The Marxist origins of China’s ethnic and religious policies for “healthy Tibetan Buddhism”; (iv) Party-defined patriotic thought of Buddhism and the adaptation of Tibetan Buddhism to the socialist society; (v) Fire hazard prevention lessons which reflect the “care and love of the Party committee” and government to the monastic population.
