CHINA-US: CASS PROFESSORS LIST MOVES BY U.S. WHICH HAVE UNDERMINED TRAUST

Writing on May 20, 2021 in the publication of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Zhang Yuyan, Professor of the School of International Relations, University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Director and Researcher of the Institute of World Economics and Politics; and Xu Xiujun, Director and Researcher of the International Political Economy Research Office of the Institute of World Economics and Politics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, examined Sino-US relations and observed that "Looking to the future, China and the United States must evade the terrorist balance based on mutual destruction between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, and continue to lay a solid foundation for the healthy and stable development of Sino-US relations by ensuring mutual dependence (Mutually Assured Interdependence)". They assessed that "The root cause of the current situation of Sino-US relations is not the "excessive" interdependence between the two countries, but the insufficient governance and control of interdependence" and "Therefore, a deeper understanding of China and the United States in the context of economic globalization is needed". Recounting the various US Government documents they pointed to the May 2020, "U.S. Strategic Guidelines for China" stating that in order to respond to the challenges China brings to the U.S., the U.S. will adopt a "whole-of-government policy" approach.” It said "in terms of regional strategy, the U.S. draws on Japan, India, and Australia in the Indo-Pacific region to step up the "Indo-Pacific Strategy", aiming to maintain and consolidate U.S. hegemony through political, diplomatic, and military means, and to contain China Strategic space and weaken China's international influence. The United States has also interfered in China's internal affairs on Taiwan, Hong Kong-related, Xinjiang-related, and Tibet-related issues, and challenged China's maritime sovereignty and rights. These strategic moves and actions of the United States have severely undermined the mutual trust between China and the United States, thereby severely eroding the political foundation of the benign interaction between the two countries".
