CHINA-PLA: PEOPLE'S DAILY PUBLISHES COMMENTATOR'S ARTICLE ON RESPECTING STATUS AND RIGHTS OF SOLDIERS

People’s Daily (June 15) published a Commentator's article on the “Law of the People’s Republic of China on the Protection of the Status, Rights and Interests of Military Personnel,” passed by the National People’s Congress on June 10. The Law seeks to improve the national legal system, protect the status and rights of soldiers in accordance with the law, lead society to respect the military profession and strengthen national defence awareness. The commentary explained the new law in the context of China’s national rejuvenation: “Our country is in a critical period of realising the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. It is imperative to formulate and propagate a law on the protection of military status and rights to strengthen and rejuvenate the army.” The law adheres to Xi Jinping Thought on Strengthening the Army as a guide and focuses on serving and preparing for war. With stronger legal guarantees, the Chinese government hopes that soldiers and officers will be encouraged to effectively perform their duties and missions, and attract talented new recruits.
