CHINA-PLA: CHINA INCREASES NUMBER OF MISSILE SILOS AND IS BUILDING NEW SILOS IN GANSU

In an article in the Washington Post on June 30, Jefffrey Lewis stated that China is building a huge nuclear launch site in Gansu, with more than 100 ICBM missile silos. New is the 700 square miles site near Yumen in Gansu, which has 119 silos. These silos are assessed as probably for China’s newest nuclear-armed missile, the DF-41. The site at Yumen is  similar to the one at Jilantai, which has only 16 of each structure. Jeffrey Lewis points out also that this doesn’t necessarily mean China is doubling the size of its arsenal as silos are sometimes used for a shell game of missiles for extra security. China's existing nuclear stockpile contains only 250 to 350 nuclear weapons.
