CHINA-ENVIRONMENT: FLOODS IN HENAN

Incessant rains since July 16 have caused major flooding in large areas of Henan and are threatening its capital  Zhengzhou. Chinese media reports that more than 35 people have been killed and the subway in a couple of cities is submerged. While the authorities are censoring reports on the floods including in the social media, a journalist for the state-owned Beijing News said it was inappropriate for people to adopt an overly positive tone to the rescue efforts. Referring to a now-deleted sentence from the Zhengzhou city government’s Weibo account, his report quoted it saying: “We have to keep the faith. After this historic downpour, the city will be cleaner, the grass will be greener and lusher.” This round of heavy rainfall has caused 3.004 million people in 103 counties (cities, districts) in the province to be affected. According to the news, the whole province of Henan has evacuated 376,000 people and resettled 256,000 people. The affected area of crops was 215.2 thousand hectares, and the direct economic loss was RMB 1.22 billion. According to the Henan Daily, on July 21, Lou Yangsheng, Party Secretary of Henan, went to Zhengzhou to check the disaster situation, inspect and guide the flood prevention and disaster relief work. At the Provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, Lou Yangsheng pointed out that production and life should be restored as soon as possible.
