CHINA-US: NEW CHINESE AMBASSADOR QIN GANG AND US DEPUTY SECRETARY OF STATE WENDY SHERMAN MEET ON AUGUST 12
On August 12, China’s newly arrived Ambassador to the United States, Qin Gang met US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman. The Chinese Embassy in the US said that during the talks “Ambassador Qin thanked the U.S. side for providing support and assistance for him” and pointed out“that the China-U.S. relationship is at a new crossroads.” He assured, “He will…work to promote a rational, stable, manageable and constructive China-U.S. relationship.” A US State Department statement on the meeting was terse but broadly positive. It said, “[Sherman] reviewed issues from her meetings with PRC officials…last month and expressed the United States’ commitment to continuing discussions.”
