CHINA-AFGHANISTAN: CHINESE COMMERCE MINISTRY THINK-TANK ADVISES GOING SLOW IN AFGHANISTAN AND AFTER THE TALIBAN FIRMLY SETTLES IN

Mei Yixin a respected world geopolitics scholar at the Chinese Ministry of Commerce think-tank 'Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation (CAITEC)' wrote in Aisixiang on August 18, that "The U.S. military is leaving Afghanistan in defeat; yet China must not indulge in a delusional dreamlike carnival". He cautioned that it is important to study Afghanistan's history before "Believing Afghanistan will from now develop peacefully and steadily, that it will immediately have unlimited business opportunities, that it is extremely important to the 'Belt and Road', and that...". Mei Yixin said, "Whether the Taliban can seat themselves firmly in Afghanistan without quickly sinking into the quagmire of tribal, sect, ethnic and other disputes, repeating the brutal infighting after the seizure of power that has repeated in Afghanistan’s history is uncertain". He referred also to the severe food shortage in Afghanistan and said at least 10 years of peace and security is necessary before the country's mineral resources, which are deep inland in mountainous and plateau areas can be exploited. Stating that the PRC should not intervene in Afghanistan’s internal affairs, and should respect its people’s choices, he added that fixed-asset investment projects, above all large-scale ones, need to be delayed.
