The US-based pro-Xi Jinping Duowei News (September 10) commenting on the 90-minute
telephone conversation between US President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping on
September 10, pointed to a press release issued by the Chinese official media which said Biden
stated that "the two countries have no reason to fall into conflict due to competition, and the United
States has no intention to change the one-China policy." It said this was not reflected in the
statement issued by the White House. It highlighted the differences in the official press releases
issued by the two sides. The US statement, it said, stated “On the call with Xi Jinping just now,
the U.S. expressed concerns about human rights and Taiwan issues,” while the Xinhua News
11
Agency’s press release stated that “Taiwan, Hong Kong-related, Xinjiang-related issues are
China’s Internal affairs have a bearing on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The United
States should respect China’s core interests and act cautiously." Duowei News observed that
Chinese and American leaders will not fail to talk about the Taiwan issue. It added that although
it was not mentioned in the official statement issued on the White House website, this time Biden
said that “the United States has no intention to change the One-China policy”. The newspaper
stated that "from this context, it can be found that the US is indeed "playing" the Taiwan issue and
testing China's reaction, but it does not intend to change the one-China policy. It is not surprising
that Biden and Xi Jinping spoke again and mentioned that they had no intention of changing the
Taiwan policy (no intention to change the one-China policy)".
