CHINA-US: US AND CHINESE PRESIDENTS TALK ON PHONE TO MANAGE COMPETITION RESPONSIBLY

The South China Morning Post (September 10) reported that US President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke over the phone on September 10 when, according to the White House they had “a broad, strategic discussion” intended to manage the increasing rivalry between Beijing and Washington. The White House said Biden had made clear the discussion was “part of the United States’ ongoing effort to responsibly manage the competition” between the two countries. It said, “President Biden underscored the United States’ enduring interest in peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific and the world and the two leaders discussed the responsibility of both nations to ensure competition does not veer into conflict.” A senior White House official said Biden’s message was that the US wanted to ensure “the dynamic remains competitive and that we don’t have any situation in the future where we veer into unintended conflict.”
