CHINA-ECONOMY: CHINA'S LARGEST CHIP MANUFACTURER TO EXPAND CAPACITY

China’s biggest chip maker, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC), announced (Reuters-September 3) that it will invest nearly USD 9 billion to expand production capacity. This is good news for China’s tech over the long term, given current short-term chip shortages and an overall strategic dependency on foreign chip makers. However, it will be a few years before the plant comes online. The new factory will be producing chips at 28nm and above – not exactly cutting edge. (Comment: For the highest-grade hardware out there, there is no end in sight to foreign dependency.)
