CHINA-LEADERSHIP: XI JINPING CALLS FOR GREATER FOCUS ON BRI

Speaking at a symposium with top officials on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) on November 19, Chinese President Xi Jinping acknowledged that “The international environment of the BRI is becoming increasingly complex” and took note of  COVID-19, climate change, and “fierce” industrial and technological competition. He stressed that “It is necessary to strengthen the coordination of mechanisms for the protection of overseas interests, international counter-terrorism, and security guarantees.” He also called for better anti-corruption laws, and less cross-border corruption. Xi Jinping touched on the need to improve international public opinion and said “[We must] build the “heart-to-heart connectivity” of the people…and never allow damage to the country’s reputation.” He added “We must educate and guide our overseas enterprises and citizens to consciously abide by local laws and respect local customs and habits.” Han Zheng presided over the conference where the other speakers were: He Lifeng, Director of the National Development and Reform Commission; Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Chen Quanguo, Secretary of the Party Committee of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region; Wu Zhenglong, Secretary of the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee; Wan Min, Chairman of China Ocean Shipping Group Co., Ltd.; Nan Cunhui, Chairman of Chint Group Co., Ltd.; and Chen Wenling, Chief Economist of the China International Economic Exchange Center.

(Comment: BRI matters more than ever to Beijing, to diversify import sources, lock in supply chains, and grow markets for Chinese traders and investors.)
