CHINA-US: CHINA RETALIATES BY SANCTIONING 4 MEMBERS OF U.S. GOVERNMENT'S COMMISSION ON INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

Following the sanction by the US Treasury on December 10 of Shohrat Zakir, Chairman of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region’s government from 2018 until early this year, and his successor and former deputy Erken Tuniyaz, China on December 21 announced retaliatory sanctions against four members of the United States Government’s Commission on International Religious Freedom. Those sanctioned by China are: Chairwoman Nadine Maenza, Deputy Chairman Nury Turkel and members Anurima Bhargava and James Carr. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said they are barred from visiting mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, and any assets they have in the country will be frozen.
